A newly designed newsletter!
Jeffrey Bonacci; SBL Secretary

First, I would like to take a minute to apologize for not having a January newsletter. As you can see, I took some time to redesign the format of the newsletter and it took a little more time than expected.

That said, welcome to the first addition of The Scoresheet; the SBL monthly newsletter! As usual, The Scoresheet will come out as a monthly, with updates and articles of interest for everyone. Please let me know if you would be interested in writing an article on a topic that may interest you. We have put this monthly together as a way for our league to stay in touch and make general announcements to everyone. Please feel free to let me know anything you would like to have included, and I will be more than happy to add it in the next installment.

A letter from IGBO
Rob Silliman; Northeast Regional Director, IGBO

I hope this finds all of you well and that you had a wonderful holiday season. I just wanted to drop a note to everyone and let them know a few things going on in IGBO and the region.

As you may know we have a very exciting time coming up in the Northeast in the next two years. In November 2009, Syracuse will be hosting IGBO Midyear Tournament 2009. I recently talked to Mark McBain and everything is on track with them and they are looking forward to seeing everyone up in their “neck of the woods”. In November 2010, Washington DC will be hosting IGBO Midyear Tournament 2010. The ball has started rolling for them and they are very excited to be hosting this event. Also, Steve Frable is working on very special event coming up which will be available to all Northeast members to participate. More details on this will follow in the upcoming months.

But before we get too far ahead of ourselves, we will be in Oklahoma City in May for IGBO Annual Tournament 2009. As you know OKC stepped up to host this event after Las Vegas fell thru. They had a much shortened time frame to raise funds to host this event and had asked all of the regions to help them out anyway we could. Many ideas were bantered about from different fundraisers to just asking people for help flat out. So, never liking to just ask for money with no return to you, I have come up with a very simple raffle. The raffle is for Storm bowling balls. There will be a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winner, and the chances are only $1 a piece. I think this very doable. People can buy as many as they want. All names will be put in a drawing which will be done at GOTHAM in April. The deadline is April 10th.

First place is a Storm Bowling ball, MSRP of $299.95, Second Place will be a Storm ball, MSRP of $169.95 and Third Place will be a Storm ball, MSRP of $109.95. Another way to do this might be to have your league buy some chances and if you win you can use the ball for some sort of raffle at your banquets. I hope that all of you will help out with this.

We're gonna have a raffle!
Rafael Rodriguez; SBL Treasurer

Hey People!!!

As your Treasurer, I'd like to thank everyone for keeping up with your weekly dues. In my 4 years as Treasurer of this league, this has to be the season with the fewest number of problems I've had in terms of collecting payments. I'd also like to thank everyone for participating in our 50-50 raffle every week.

As you are all aware, this money we raise thru 50-50 goes into strengthening our prize fund and every little bit helps. However, we are struggling to keep pace with the estimates I set up for the season. So to help remedy that, the Officers have decided to do some special raffles beginning in March, alongside our weekly 50-50 raffle. If anybody would like to donate a prize to be raffled off please let me know. We'd like to get as many prizes as we can.

Thanx again! Happy Bowling! Stay warm!!!

Ross' Tip Du Jour
Ross Hewitt; SBL President

How To Throw A Ball
At the start, hold the ball squarely in front of you from chin to knee level, and not off to one side or the other of your body. Do not hold the ball above the level of your eyes. Righties, hold the ball in both hands, with the thumb and fingers of the right hand in the ball, and the weight of the ball resting mainly on the left hand so that the right is under no strain. You may stand erect, or partially bent forward, or bent from the waist. The knees should be bent just enough to be relaxed.

A message from our readers

A Newbie's Tale
Jacob Boxer; Chasing Cookie

It was late this summer when I was first approached to join the SBL. My initial reaction was hesitation. I wasn’t really sure if I wanted to commit to a 30-week season, or join a league where I only knew one person. I also hadn’t bowled in quite some time. However, my friend convinced me that it would be fun, and I figured I’d give it a whirl.

I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised. Not only was there a really good mix of people, everyone seemed very friendly. It didn’t seem like one of those leagues where you see teammates fighting with each other or ultra-competitive people that can’t stand losing, but don’t know how to win graciously either.

The more I bowled, the more comfortable I felt. Thanks to the help and support of my teammates, and even some rival teams, my average began to climb along with my confidence. I began to realize that we were all on a pretty level playing field. Our averages were all within about 60 points of each other, and thanks to the handicap, any team has a chance to win any game no matter where they are in the standings.

When I was asked if I wanted to keep bowling next year, I didn’t even have to think before I answered yes. I hope we can convince others to join up and have a bigger, better SBL in 2009-2010.
